By closing the mines though, it left the country with massive power cuts, cutting us down to I believe, a 3 working day week while she was in charge. I will say that the unions were probably over the top at the time, and yes, it needed to stop - people were striking all the time. As I live in a former mining village, I know that here there is a lot of coal underground still (and our colliery didn't shut until the 90s, although it was privatized) but now there are houses built on the old colliery site, so how could we dig that up again without destroying people's (relatively new) homes? If we had kept them open we could've kept the power stations in this country running at least and not had to import as much fuel as we do now.

She Closed a failing industry, the mines. In fact in years to come we will be better off because of it, Coal still in the country, in the future the world coming to a global energy crisis, we still can dig up the country and get all the remaining coal left when Thatcher closed the mines.
